Baptism,Blessing & Naming Information

Like a wedding, the arrival of a child should be a joyous occasion. The welcoming of the child into the family's faith, or belief system, and having a blessing bestowed upon them is an ancient tradition. As is naming the child and presenting them to family, friends and the community. I will work with you to help create the personalized ceremony you desire, including such things as music, readings, poems, or special ceremonies/rituals in addition to, or in lieu of, traditional services.

Baptisms generally fall into two categories. The first, is a Christian baptism. This is when the child is welcomed into the Christian faith. The parents. Godparents (optional) and family pray for the child and promise to raise the child in the teachings of Jesus. The child is then blessed with holy water in the name of the Trinity. The second, is a religious non-Christian ceremony. Non-Christian religious (theist) baptisms are for those who worship God, but may not have Christ based beliefs. In this service the child is welcomed into God's family, and the child's family, friends and Godparents (optional) pray for the child and promise to bring up the child in God's light.

Many people who do not have stronger religious convictions, or have a more pantheist or spiritualistic viewpoint often choose a baby blessing ceremony. In this ceremony the parents, family and friends ask the universe to bless the child, and promise to love and care for the child as it grows. Blessing ceremony options may be water, oil, flower/wreath, sage, or four directions/elements blessings.

Many who do not subscribe to religious or spiritual views may want a secular ceremony. A naming ceremony is a good option in this case. While gathering with family and friends the parents declare the name of the child, and then those present promise to love and care for the child as it grows.

Adult baptism, blessings and naming ceremonies are also available.
